ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — A former Covington police officer has been arrested for allegedly misusing his department’s Flock camera system, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI).

On Wednesday, the GBI arrested 29-year-old Michael Canty on charges of misuse of a license plate reader system and violation of oath of office, the agency announced Thursday.

On Aug. 6, the Covington Police Department asked the GBI to investigate allegations that the department’s Flock Safety system had been misused.

The GBI said its preliminary investigation indicates that Canty accessed the Flock system for non-law enforcement purposes. The agency has not released more information on the case.

Canty is the latest north Georgia law enforcement official to face accusations of misusing Flock cameras. Dozens of law enforcement officers have been fired and charged after their superiors said they abused the Atlanta-based Flock camera license plate tracking system.
